20th October, 2026

AVORIAZ 1800

Welcome to Avoriaz

Perched at 1,800 metres in the heart of the French Alps, Avoriaz is one of Europe’s most distinctive and convenient ski resorts. Famous for its snow-sure location, striking wooden architecture and completely pedestrianised village, Avoriaz offers a fantastic combination of excellent skiing, family-friendly facilities and lively après-ski.

Situated in the heart of the vast Portes du Soleil, Avoriaz provides access to approximately 600km of pistes linking 12 resorts across France and Switzerland. Whether you’re a beginner finding your ski legs, an intermediate looking to explore or an experienced skier searching for a challenge, there is plenty of terrain to discover.

What really makes Avoriaz special is its car-free environment. Instead of roads and traffic, the resort is filled with snowy pathways, skiers gliding through the village and traditional horse-drawn sleighs transporting visitors and their luggage. With virtually all accommodation offering ski-in, ski-out access, it’s difficult to imagine a more convenient place for a ski holiday.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Avoriaz is renowned for its excellent skiing and snowboarding. Its high-altitude location and predominantly north-facing slopes help provide reliable snow conditions throughout much of the winter season.

Beginners are well catered for, with dedicated nursery slopes, gentle runs and a choice of ski schools. The resort’s compact layout and easy access to the slopes make learning to ski particularly straightforward.

Intermediate skiers will love Avoriaz. There is a fantastic network of blue and red runs, with plenty of opportunities to explore neighbouring resorts such as Morzine, Les Gets and Châtel, or venture across the Swiss border. The variety of terrain makes it an ideal destination for a full week’s skiing.

Advanced skiers have access to challenging black runs, moguls and extensive off-piste opportunities, subject to conditions and appropriate safety precautions. The famous Swiss Wall is one of the most demanding marked descents in the Portes du Soleil and a memorable challenge for expert skiers.

Snowboarders and freestyle enthusiasts are equally well looked after. Avoriaz has a long-standing freestyle reputation, with several snowparks and the famous Stash, a unique woodland freestyle area featuring natural-style obstacles and wooden features.

Accommodation

One of Avoriaz’s biggest attractions is the fantastic range of accommodation available to suit almost every budget and style of holiday. From affordable, traditional French apartments to luxurious residences, hotels, catered chalets and all-inclusive-style stays at Belambra, there really is something for everyone.

The real advantage of staying in Avoriaz is that virtually all properties offer ski-in, ski-out access. There is no need to rely on ski buses or spend time travelling to the lifts each morning. Simply step outside, put on your skis and head straight onto the slopes. This makes Avoriaz particularly appealing for families with children, groups of mixed abilities and anyone wanting to make the most of their time in the mountains.

For those looking for an affordable ski holiday, Avoriaz has an excellent selection of traditional French self-catering apartments. These tend to be compact and practical, offering great value for families and groups of friends who are happy to cater for themselves. With supermarkets, bakeries and restaurants all within easy reach, self-catering is a convenient and flexible option.

At the other end of the scale, Avoriaz offers a growing choice of luxury apartments and high-end residences. These combine stylish interiors, spacious living areas and impressive mountain views, with some offering additional facilities such as swimming pools, spas and wellness areas.

Catered chalets are another popular choice, particularly for groups and families who prefer a more relaxed holiday experience. With breakfast, afternoon tea and evening meals often included, a catered chalet allows guests to enjoy their skiing without worrying about cooking and shopping.

For those who prefer hotel accommodation, Avoriaz has a selection of properties offering comfortable rooms and additional services. Belambra Les Cimes du Soleil is particularly appealing for families seeking a full-board, club-style holiday, with dining, entertainment and children’s activities. Package inclusions vary, so it’s worth checking whether lift passes, ski hire and lessons are included.

Whether you’re planning a full family ski holiday or a long weekend with friends, Avoriaz’s accommodation and convenient resort layout make it an exceptionally easy place to stay. Everything is close at hand, allowing you to spend less time organising your day and more time enjoying the slopes.

Après-ski and the famous La Folie Douce

No guide to Avoriaz would be complete without mentioning the legendary La Folie Douce Avoriaz, one of the most famous après-ski venues in the French Alps and a real highlight of the resort’s social scene.

Located in the heart of Avoriaz, La Folie Douce brings a unique blend of mountain dining, live entertainment, DJs and high-energy après-ski parties to the slopes. What starts as a relaxed lunchtime atmosphere gradually transforms into an incredible open-air party, with live singers, dancers and performers entertaining the crowds against a spectacular alpine backdrop.

As the afternoon progresses, the music gets louder, the DJs turn up the tempo and the terrace fills with skiers and snowboarders enjoying the party atmosphere. It’s a fantastic experience, whether you’re celebrating with friends, enjoying a long weekend or simply looking for a memorable afternoon after a great day’s skiing.

La Folie Douce also offers excellent mountain dining, with two different restaurant options. La Petite Cuisine provides a more casual, self-service lunch, while La Fruitière offers a more refined, sit-down dining experience. Both are ideal for combining a delicious mountain lunch with an afternoon of entertainment.

One of the great things about La Folie Douce in Avoriaz is its central location. Unlike some mountain après-ski venues that require a long ski home afterwards, you can easily return to your accommodation on foot, making it particularly convenient for those who want to enjoy the atmosphere without worrying about a difficult final descent.

Although famous for its lively parties, La Folie Douce also welcomes families, particularly earlier in the afternoon when the atmosphere is more relaxed. Later on, it becomes one of the resort’s liveliest spots and a must-visit for anyone who loves a proper après-ski celebration.

For groups of friends, couples and long-weekend visitors, La Folie Douce is undoubtedly one of Avoriaz’s biggest attractions and adds another dimension to an already fantastic ski resort.

Restaurants and nightlife

Beyond La Folie Douce, Avoriaz has a great selection of restaurants, bars and après-ski venues, offering something for everyone after a day on the mountain and offering options for varying budgets.

On the slopes, there are mountain restaurants where you can stop for a leisurely lunch or a drink in the sunshine. Back in the village, you’ll find everything from casual pizza restaurants and burger bars to traditional Savoyard restaurants serving local favourites such as fondue, raclette and tartiflette.

The après-ski scene is lively without being overwhelming. There are bars where you can enjoy music and drinks after skiing, alongside quieter venues ideal for families and couples. For those looking to continue into the evening, the resort also has late-night entertainment.

One of the great things about Avoriaz is that everything is within easy walking distance, so heading out for dinner or drinks couldn’t be simpler.

Activities away from the slopes

Aquariaz Water Park

One of the resort’s standout attractions, Aquariaz is an indoor tropical-themed water park with swimming pools, slides and relaxation areas. It’s particularly popular with families and provides a fantastic alternative to skiing.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides

Avoriaz’s traditional horse-drawn sleighs are a charming feature of the resort. They provide a memorable way to travel through the snow-covered village and are especially popular with children.

Winter walks and snowshoeing

For those wanting to explore the mountains at a slower pace, there are beautiful winter walking routes and snowshoeing opportunities in the surrounding alpine scenery.

The resort also offers sledging, wellness facilities, indoor entertainment and seasonal activities, making it a great choice for non-skiers and families looking for more than just skiing.

A fantastic resort for families

Avoriaz is widely regarded as one of the best family-friendly ski resorts in the French Alps, and it’s easy to see why.

The pedestrianised village provides a relaxed environment without cars travelling through the resort centre. The excellent ski-in, ski-out accommodation means families can avoid the hassle of ski buses, while the nursery slopes and ski school facilities make it a great place for children to learn.

There is also plenty to keep younger visitors entertained away from the slopes, from Aquariaz and sledging to sleigh rides and other winter activities.

For parents, the convenience of having accommodation, shops, restaurants and ski facilities all close together makes a real difference. Whether travelling with toddlers, teenagers or a larger family group, Avoriaz offers a wonderfully straightforward ski holiday experience.

Perfect for a long weekend

Avoriaz is not just a fantastic destination for a week-long family holiday; it’s also an excellent choice for a long ski weekend.

With Geneva Airport approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours away by road in normal winter conditions, the resort is relatively easy to reach from the UK and other European destinations.

The biggest advantage for short breaks is the convenience once you arrive. With almost everything accessible on skis, you can maximise your time on the mountain without worrying about travelling between accommodation and lifts.

For groups of friends or couples wanting three or four days of great skiing, good restaurants and a lively atmosphere, Avoriaz is hard to beat. The famous La Folie Douce is an added attraction for those looking to combine skiing with a memorable après-ski experience.
